Its time to halt the hustle and open your heart

Its time to halt the hustle and open your heartIts time to halt the hustle and open your heartEvery day youre hustlin. Every day you try to get farther. You think to try harder. You make lists and lists and lists and tape up calendars and create reminders.Reminders to yourself to do more. Reminders that if you have free time then youre obviously not out there hustling enough. You should be meeting everyone. And talking. And selling. And building.Every day youre hustlin. And every day youre in the slog. Your energy is frenetic. Youre never satisfied. Always wanting more. And permanently thinking about what you can get. What you can accomplish. And what mountain is left to climb? Its tiring. Maybe not at first. And maybe not in the beginning. But eventually, the steam will dissipate. The fire of your passion will be replaced by the frustrated heat of your cheeks. Your headaches. Your energy depleted. Barely there for yourself much less for the pace of the hustle. And you wonder why.Why a re you doing this? Like this. Isnt there a better way? There is. Drop the hustle and return to your heart. Its waking up to hot water with lemon while noticing the sun instead of the brightness of your laptop. Its choosing meditation and intention instead of going over those meeting notes one last time. Its a vacation in August instead of finishing the final to-do list. Its a sweaty class in the middle of the day. Yes, right smack in the middle of your day.Its asleep before 11. And a nap if you need it.Its painting greeting cards on a Tuesday night instead of shelling out business cards. Its making an impression at that networking meeting by connecting via soul. Its choosing creativity over cortisol. Its slowing down. Calming down. And opening up.A crazy thing happens when you stop all of the chasing and consider attracting. What would it take to attract everything you want, the opportunities youre seeking, the doors youre opening and the people youre wooing. It would take knowing who you a re and what you are when youve dropped the hustle. It would force you to know what brings you joy other than finally climbing that mountain you tasked yourself with. It would require you to know fulfillment brought by something other than inbox zero, something other than Ill be happy when, something bigger than Once Ive Something more than hustle. It would require you to go in. Way in. And orbit in the cosmos of your heart. Its uncomfortable. Life without the hustle is quieter. And yet louder. So much louder. You hear your own voice. You notice your own shit. You feel your feelings. And you hear the questions that your soul finally had the strength to bubble to the surface. Youll feel naked. And yet so beautifully free. And eventually, youll feel tempted, to fill the void with the hustle. Because doesnt busy mean success? And shouldnt hard work be hard? Youll feel tempted to look at the rest of the world and say yes.But dont. Because when you choose to sit there in your stillness, tha t beautiful heart you know is in your chest will make itself known to you. Youll know what you really want. Youll put out a pure energy of desire and intent. And that grid of energy will begin to pull toward you that which youve been hustling. So if youre tired. If your energy is down. Or if youre wondering if this is the only way. Drop the draining pace of the hustle. Forget about what everyone else is doing and go your way. Through the doors to your heart.Click here for free access to my 5-step guide to building even more of these amazing relationships.Maxie McCoy is a writer and speaker obsessed with giving women the tools they need to believe in themselves. 1 Question to Ask Your Boss When Youre Confused - The Muse

1 Question to Ask Your Boss When Youre Confused - The Muse1 Question to Ask Your Boss When Youre ConfusedYour boss sat you down yesterday and outlined your next project. The problem? Youre completely confused about the direction youre supposed to take it in, making your head feel like its buzzing with cartoon birds (without the anvil having fallen on your head).Dont stress The key is to catch your confusion early on and address it- because the further along you go in completing the assignment without a clear path, the further away youre likely to end up from your boss original plan.Of course, you could just tell your boss youre lost or ask for more direction- thats completely fair. But if youre worried about coming across as incompetent or you dont have the kind of relationship with your manager in which you can be totally honest, ask this one questionWhat greater goal is this tied to?Why is this so effective? For one thing, it makes you look really, really good. By focusing on goals rather than the more tedious stuff (or exclaiming, Why am I doing this in the first place?), you show you care about contributing to the greater success of the team or the company. And, you prove youre someone who thinks long-term and big picture. For another thing, it forces your boss to ask themselves this question. Maybe youre confused because there isnt a clear goal attached to the project. By making them clarify, youre better able to understand the purpose, making it a whole lot easier to strategize. In addition, it holds your boss (and you) accountable. If at or toward completion your manager seems unsatisfied, you can come back to their answer and explain why you decided to go the direction you did. Then, you can have a discussion figuring out whether you hit that goal, or how you can better accomplish it going forward.Besides, goals are great. They help us move forward, and they make our work feel more fulfilling. And dont we all want to do work that has a purpose?

12 Gift Ideas for Flight Instructors

12 Gift Ideas for Flight Instructors 12 Gift Ideas for Flight Instructors Looking for a great gift idea for a flight instructor? If your instructor changed your life by teaching you how to fly,  they deserve something special. Heres a list of gift ideas for the flight instructor that covers a  wide range of budget options.   01 Ipad Accessories Getty/Jacom Stephens More and more flight instructors are using new cockpit technologies, including  iPads, in the cockpit. For the instructor with an iPad, its safe to say that theyre in the market for the latest and greatest tablet accessories. A new kneeboard or iPad mount would make  a great gift. And while gift cards arent the most creative option, an iTunes gift card would certainly be valuable to a flight instructor, as they can apply it toward their favorite iTunes subscription service like ForeFlight or a new training app.   02 Bose HeadsetTheres a good chance that the  flight instructor youre buying for  has been wearing the same pair of headsets that hes had since he started flying. Theyre probably old, used and abused. A new headset is always a nice surprise. If your budget allows, spring for Bose headsets or another high-end pair.  ? 03 Tech-Friendly Winter GlovesInstructors are always taking gloves on and off. Between putting oil in during preflight to taking notes on the iPad during student landing practice, instructors need warm, tech-friendly gloves. They easily get dirty and are worn frequently in the winter, so having more than one pair is a bonus!   04 Teaching GadgetsPilots love gadgets, and flight instructors like teaching gadgets. Flight instructors love things like highlighter tape, chart covers, little model airplanes,  miniature runways, supersized airfoils, old flight instruments, gyroscopes and various other teaching gadgets. A gift basket full of gadgets would be a great gift idea for the flight instructor. 05 Laser Pointer/PenEvery instructor needs about five or ten laser pointers, just for fun. Sportys Pilot Shop makes a great all-in-one tool for instructor  pilots that has a laser pointer, pen, and flashlight in one.   06 TransceiverA transceiver is necessary when your student solos, and it gets old having to borrow transceivers from other instructors or use the old barely-working ones from local FBOs. A shiny new  Icom A6 COM Transceiver  will be cherished and well-used by the  flight instructor. 07 Digital LogbookA digital logbook makes a flight instructors job easier. Its a great gift idea for the instructor that is still using a paper logbook. A digital logbook like LogTen  Pro calculates different flight times automatically, making it easier to find and calculate things like the number of night cross-country GPS approaches when needed.  It also makes the logbook searchable, so if a flight instructor wanted to look up the details of a cross-country flight with a particular student, he could search by student name, date, etc. 08 Aircraft ModelA model airplane is always a great gift choice. Choose a model aircraft that the instructor favors and personalize it with the tail number and paint scheme. 09 ChartsFlight instructors are always buying new charts. Paying for a few months of a subscription service from Jeppesen would brighten his day. Even an instructor that uses electronic charts should have paper charts on hand as a backup.   10 Aviation AttireEvery flight instructor likes aviation-related attire. Choose something that fits the instructors personality. If hes funny and goofy, then go for one of those funny aviation shirts.  A more serious instructor might appreciate a classic baseball cap with a logo or airplane on it.   11 Food and WineInstructors dont always get paid well and its a long-standing joke that they are starving pilots, so a gift card for a restaurant or a basket of goodies would be appropriate. Many flight instructors will tell you that a bottle of wine or liquor makes a great gift, but alcohol isnt always appropriate. If you have to question the idea at all, its probably best to avoid it. 12 Flashlight or LED HeadlampFlashlights are always getting lost or broken (or borrowed and never returned). A flight instructor can never have too many flashlights on hand. Aim for a really nice one with white, red and blue bulbs that are easy to distinguish from each other in the dark. A headlamp makes a great gift as well, as it frees up the hands for other tasks like adding oil or taking notes.

First of all, the opening summary statement does an excellent job of providing information about the applicant’s background and talents in an articulate and concise fashion. It is the appropriate length, and the summary itself has correct formatting. To make the section more captivating, the applicant uses action-oriented language throughout the summary. The skills section is also properly formatted using bullets and is of the correct length. It uses a balanced mixture of hard skills such as “software design” and soft skills such as “proactive problem solver.” The work history section contains only necessary information about positions t hat are relevant to the job the applicant is applying for. Each statement or sentence begins with the correct tense and a verb, and there are metrics present in each entry (ex: “oversaw staff of five information security personnel”). Instead of a long list of professional duties, the work history section provides details about each task as well as its outcome. The education section exhibits the expected formatting and contains only information about relevant degrees (ex: Bachelor of Science in Computer Programming). The entire resume is free of misspelled words and grammatical errors, making it easy to read and interpret. Hiring managers often must read through dozens of applications, so you can’t expect your resume to receive more than a brief “skim” at first. If you want to assemble a powerful resume, you need to follow the resume writing best practices. Referencing the chief information security officer resume sample can help you learn how to do this with ease.Costly Chief Information Security Officer Resume Mistakes To AvoidEveryo ne knows that lying on your resume, or leaving it riddled with misspelled words is the easiest way to ensure that you don’t get the job you are applying for. However, if you want to craft a resume like the chief information security officer resume sample, you will need to avoid some of the less common resume mistakes. Avoiding these mistakes is easy if you know what to look for. In the resume sample, the applicant only includes relevant information. This is extremely important; if you include information about your previous job as a barista on your information security resume, the hiring manager may not call you. Each section is an appropriate length, and the applicant does not bombard the reader with superfluous details. Finally, you will want to avoid using the same words repeatedly. The sample uses a wide range of words and a professional tone throughout. Never use casual language when writing a resume.ConclusionThe jobseeker has written this chief information security officer resume sample in a manner to attract the attention of hiring managers. The Difference Between Resumes and CVs

The Difference Between Resumes and CVs The Difference Between Resumes and CVs Resumes and CVs are both documents that elaborate on your career path, but there are major differences between  the two documents. What are they? Ive listed it all out below to make things simple! Never confuse a resume and a CV again. 1. Length:  First off, a resume is usually around a page sometimes two pages at the absolute maximum. A CV is almost never  just one page. If your CV is a single page, you most likely have a resume. 2. Details:  While you want to be detailed in your job descriptions on a resume, there is also a lot you may leave out to save space or simply because you can always elaborate more in the interview.  For instance, you often wont list specific projects you completed at a previous job unless they were major achievements for you or you earned special recognition for them. A resume is like a preview for a movie: It shows off all the great parts and entices employers to learn more by going to see the whole picture, so to speak. Your resume highlights all of your qualifications and achievements, and it encourages hiring managers to  give you a chance at a wowing them further in an interview. Meanwhile, a CV is exhaustive. You want everything about your career on that CV, including internships, publications, research experience, and all levels of training. Think of your CV as the full-length feature film. On your CV, you want to show off the whole shebang. Make sure to include publications that are both in print and in progress, your independent research, and all of those little details that  make your career unique. CV stands for curriculum vitae, which is (roughly) Latin for the story of your life so go all out and show potential employers the entire story of your career. Who Should Use a CV? Who Should Use a Resume? CVs are most commonly used by people the research, scientific, and/or higher education fields, including grad students, professors, and so on. People with extensive knowledge or certifications who have been in an industry for 10+ years also may use one, including doctors, scientists, firefighters, and engineers. Most people will use resumes, simply because hiring managers tend to prefer these more concise documents. Unless youre an individual in a very specialized field where a lot of certifications, research, and/or specific knowledge are  required, you should stick with a resume. Im Making a CV What Should I Put on It?   One word:  Everything! Some of the things that may be included on a CV but not a resume are classes youve taken, your specialized areas of study within a field, any publications you have, research experience, work projects, and personal research projects as well. You should also highlight your education at the top of a CV, whereas, with a resume, you can usually leave your educational details at the bottom. The Bottom Line:  A resume is a picture of your career, all wrapped up in an easy-to-read and concise package meant to entice hiring managers to interview you. A CV, on the other hand, is much more in depth, and it is used to sell all of your experiences in various critical areas of your career.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Sensing Artificial Skin

Sensing Artificial Skin Sensing Artificial Skin Sensing Artificial Skin Advances in the development and sophistication of prosthetic limbs are numerous. Researchers continue, however, to work on sensory needs: How to make an artificial limb feel objects and allow a user to react to touch. Now, a team of Stanford University researchers is moving closer to that goal, developing artificial skin made of very thin plastic layers that detects pressure through a newly developed sensor, which then delivers an electric signal to neurons. We want to communicate information or stimulus in a way the brain can understand, says Alex Chortos, a doctoral candidate in materials science and engineering who is part of a team led by Zhenan Bao, a Stanford professor of chemical engineering. This is the first time a flexible, skin-like material has been able to detect pressure and also transmit a signal to a component of the nervous system, said Bao in a statement. The work involves three components: the sensor, a flexible circuit to transmit electronic signals and a neurological recognition of the signal. Chartos says the team has been working on the sensor since about 2008, and more recently to link the sensor to the brain. Sensor and circuits are laid down on two-ply plastic skin using an inkjet process. Image: Stanford University The sensor is comprised of two thin rubber-based plastic layers. The top layer creates a sensing mechanism based on earlier work by Baos team that showed how to use the spring of the molecular structures of plastics and rubber, the components of the sensor. The sensitivity was increased by fabricating the plastic with a waffle pattern, which compresses the plastics molecular springs even further. The team then added billions of carbon nanofibers throughout the plastic. This increases pressure sensitivity even more as the nanofibers are pushed closer together during touch, enabling them to conduct electricity. The response is very complicated, says Chartos. Human skin transmits pressure information in short electrical pulses, similar to Morse Code. By increasing pressure on the waffled plastic skin, the nanotubes are pushed even closer together. Electric pulses ebb and flow to the sensor as pressure changes. Moving the electric pulses to nerve cells is the next step. To accomplish that, the team worked with colleagues from PARC, a Xerox Company, using the firms inkjet technology to print flexible circuits onto plastic. For sensitive artificial skin to become practical, a large number of sensors must be able to be deposited over a large surface, says Chartos. This work demonstrated its practicality. But the electronic signal still must be recognized by the brain through a biological neuron to complete the chain. Researchers worked with Stanford bioengineering professor Karl Deisseroths lab to leverage Deisseroths work in optogenetics, which combines optics and genetics. Cells are bioengineered to make them sensitive to light frequencies. Light pulses can then be used to switch cellular processes on and off. The team engineered neurons to represent the human nervous system and translated electronic impulses from the artificial skin into light pulses. Those pulses then activated the neurons, closing the loop and showing the artificial skin can mimic the working of human skin. The work is detailed in a paper published in Science. Theres a long way to go to get to full functionality of [real] skin, cautions Chartos, noting there are several sensing mechanisms in the human hand, including temperature and texture. Weve demonstrated that a single pressure receptor acts in a certain way. But to be able to fully mimic skin we have to implement a number of different sensors. The team feels its approach lends itself to adding sensors for other sensations as they may be developed, supported by inkjet fabrication to lay down a network of sensors over a plastic layer that would cover a prosthetic hand, or arm. However, the density of receptors in real skin is very high. Right now, researchers could only put down 10 to 20, believes Chartos. Weve really not worked on that yet. Weve fabricated an individual design to test a sensors capability to process neural signaling. There also are other stumbling blocks. There are other limiting factors for a real prosthetic hand, notes Chartos. For instance, on the biological side, there are a number of peripheral nerves you have to make contact with. Other methods of stimulating nerves may also be used in future prosthetics. The Stanford team has worked with other Stanford professors on direct simulation of neurons with electrical pulses. Last year, a team at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland OH, developed a system for attaching a prosthetic hand into surgically implanted electrodes in a patients forearm to allow a user to feel what the devices fingers were doing. Also, a new DARPA initiative called the Hand Proprioception and Touch Interfaces Program is working with private companies and universities, including CWRU, to develop technology to send signals back and forth to the brain. Besides implanting electrodes in nerves and muscles to send signals to the prosthetic device, the device itself would be embedded with sensors to send signals back to the brain. DARPAs goal is to ready an FDA-approved system for testing within four years. Learn about the latest trends in medical diagnostics at ASMEs Global Congress onNanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology. For Further Discussion We’ve demonstrated that a single pressure receptor acts in a certain way. But to be able to fully mimic skin we have to implement a number of different sensors.Alex Chartos, Stanford University

It’s an opportunity for executives and senior managers to mingle with the rest of the staff so that when an employee approaches the senior leaders in the future, the contact might not seem so scary. Halloween also provides the perfect setting for the families of your employees to see the workplace where Mommy or Daddy spend most days. Family friendships are also a frequent offshoot of families enjoying fun activities together in the workplace. These are a boon for helping you reduce employee turnover. After all, who wants to leave their best friends behind? Compelling reasons exist to celebrate Halloween in the workplace. From the employers perspective, you just need to prepare and communicate so that you and your employees are on the same page about appropriate behavior at work. Halloween celebrations can range from trick-or-treating and crafts with employees’ children to pumpkin carving contests, to adult costume parties with alcohol. They all encourage employee interaction and workplace engagement. They all open the employer to potential liabilities and concerns. In Why Halloween Hijinx Should Frighten Employers, according to Dennis Donnelly, J. D., Halloween celebrations in the office also bring their own set of challenges for the employer. Although Halloween is meant to be a festive day, for some employers it could be more frightening than fun when employees celebrate Halloween in the office. Do make plans to celebrate Halloween in your workplace- but lay the groundwork early to nix the scary aspects. Make the participation voluntary and never pressure employees who may not want to participate. At the same time, make plans and communicate with employees to avoid these four potential problems. Sexual harassmentHostile work environmentAlcohol-related problemsPhysical safety Sexual Harassment Dont count on  your employees to practice appropriate dress without a reminder. The reminder can accompany the invitation to dress up for the Halloween costume contest or attend an adult workplace costume party. Tell employees that they need to make their costumes G-rated and that, while you encourage an employee to get into the spirit of the costume, this does not mean behavior that can be considered hostile or sexual harassment. Professional behavior is expected even when the employee is wearing a costume. Here is a sample note from an employer (scroll to the end of that article to see the sample note). You can avoid this possibility altogether by not holding an adult costume contest or party. Instead, focus on activities for the children of your employees. The majority of adults behave when they know that children will be present. You can also set a theme for adult costumes (but fewer employees will participate) such as Disney characters, aliens, or the 1950s. Hostile Work Environment Your reminder note should also tell employees what costume themes to avoid. Steer clear of costumes that demean political parties or figures, show insensitivity to employee religions and nationalities and make fun of diseases such as mental illness. Attorneys remind employers that a discrimination complaint would not be a welcome ending to a happy Halloween celebration. Pornography, unwanted physical contact, and fake weapons all produce a hostile work environment in which some employees may feel offended or uncomfortable. So, remind your employees not to go there. Alcohol-Related Problems Drunk employees are a problem. They are more likely to commit sexual harassment or create a hostile work environment when alcohol colors their judgment. They are more likely to injure themselves or others. They are even more likely to make fools of themselves by spending the evening throwing up in the restroom or falling off their chair. Even if the employee doesn’t remember what he did in the morning, his behavior will earn him the disrespect of his coworkers. People do talk and gossip about what goes on in the office- even more so about party behavior. Senior managers, who hear about or see the employee actions, are less likely to think well of or promote employees who show poor judgment in a professional setting. Even though parties are supposed to be fun, workplace parties remain work functions- employees do well to remember this. Here is how employers can minimize the impact of serving alcohol at workplace events. Physical Safety for Employees Employers need to exhibit common sense. Never serve alcohol at a pumpkin carving party or contest, for example. Require each child participating in a pumpkin carving contest or trick or treating in the workplace to be under the supervision of an adult. If there is an injury while employees celebrate Halloween in your workplace, the injury should be recorded in your OSHA reporting. Limit the prominence of alcohol at company events and parties to diminish the possibility of employee accidents like falling down stairs or an auto accident on the way home. In this era of marijuana legalization, you may also want to encourage employees to limit their smoking of pot as a part of your pre-party communication. It is also the preference of many employers that alcohol is not served when employers hold parties and events for employees and their children in the workplace. You can celebrate a wonderful Halloween at your workplace. If you plan and communicate with employees in advance of the event, you will ensure the happiness and safety of your employees and limit your legal liability as an employer. Delivering the Goods

Delivering the Goods Delivering the Goods Delivering the Goods Companies that provide products to developing nationsespecially those in sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and Asiaoften face significant supply chain challenges. They have to deal with a lack of skilled labor, complex tariff schemes, and inadequate access to base materials and manufacturing equipment. Supply chains in developing markets are often longer and more complex than those in the developed worlds markets. Depending on the end product and customerfor example, high-income customer versus base-of-the-pyramid customerbase material sourcing, manufacturing, and assembly are likely happening in different places. One of the greatest challenges to supply chains is government policy, which tends to have greater influence in emerging markets than in most developed ones. Local, regional, and national laws, regulations, and taxes can often make the difference between profit and loss. Governments of some developing countries, anxious to raise their standards of living and create local jobs, pass laws and create tax structures that favor in-country production. Brazils complex tax regime, for ex- ample, strongly favors local production. Getting all the required permits and approvals can also be difficult and time-consuming. In many emerging markets, companies must obtain official authorization to perform basic supply chain functions such as warehousing and distribution, or operating a retail outlet. In India, for example, foreign retailers were not allowed to open their own outlets until 2011. The technology of transportation, communication, shipping, and delivery is, of course, far more advanced and integrated in industrialized nations than in developing countries. This especially affects supply chain management, or SCM. Developing nations, for instance, are typically less sophisticated in areas of software, so tracking the status of products moving through the supply chain is difficult or impossible. Communicationsfor example, electronic data exchanges between trucking companies and shippersare also problematical. Third-party logistics services, which are critical for efficiently managing supply chains in the West, are often poorly developed in emerging nations. Shipping containers wait at the terminal at PortElizabeth, N.J. In many developing countries, SCM is still regarded as a low-value, tactical discipline, which means that its strategic value is often not fully exploited, said Ken Cottrill, research marketing and development lead for the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Center for Transportation and Logistics. Part of MITs School of Engineering, the center coordinates more than 100 supply chain research efforts across the MIT campus and around the world. The center also addresses the lack of supply chain management skills by creating centers of education and research in developing countries. For example, the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation, or MISI, is a joint venture between MIT and the Government of Malaysia. Launched in 2011 in Shah Alam, Malaysia, MISI is part of the MIT Global SCALE (Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence) Network. This international alliance of leading research and educational organizations is focused developing innovative global supply chain and logistics solutions. Modeled after MITs supply chain management program at the Center for Transportation and Logistics, MISI, an independent academic institution established under Malaysian law, offers both master and doctoral programs in supply chain management and logistics. MISIs program is now educating talented supply chain masters students from across Asia, Cottrill said. MISI will also conduct research and corporate outreach activities for global as well as local firms that operate in Southeast Asia. Essmart Global, based in Cambridge, Mass., provides essential technology manufacturers with a marketing and distribution channel in Tamil Nadu, India. The company provides lighting, cooking, clean water, farming, and electronics products to low- and middle-income households, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Products are selected by a team experienced in engineering, user design, and cultural considerations. All Essmart Global providers have a local presence in India, either by importing their products or manufacturing in-country. Essmart Global helps distribute these products to customers in areas outside cities. ;custompagebreak; Working out the best way to source products and find good logistics partners for these products has been a big challenge, said Jackie Stenson, a mechanical engineer and co-founder of Essmart Global. There are no logistics companies that can provide delivery to the last mile beyond tier-3 cities. This is where our local sales executives take over. They drive on routes to our rural retail shops and deliver our products via motorbike. Tier-3 cities are those with populations under 1 million. This is similar to an approach that Coca-Cola developed for getting its products to rural end- users in East Africa. To deliver its products to thousands of rural outlets, Coca-Cola established a network of micro-distribution centers in these areas. MDC owners use handcarts to complete last-mile delivery. Since launching the concept in Ethiopia in 1999, Coca-Cola has developed a network of more than 3,000 MDCs across East Africa, wrote Ashish Avasthy, an analyst for McKinsey Co., in a January 2015 article, Winning Supply Chain Strategies for African Markets, in Supply Chain Quarterly. Further, Coca-Cola says that its MDC network handles the distribution of more than 80 percent of its business in some East African countries, providing employment for 13,500 people. Essmart local sales team at product demonstration in local village. Joe Fernandez is founder and executive director of Houston-based Trade Without Borders, an organization that provides energy products, especially solar systems and devices powered by solar, and low-power dc appliances to developing regions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. All of its products are manufactured in China. The scale of manufacturing operations can be large in China, as there are fewer restrictions to scaling up ones manufacturing operations, Fernandez said. The manufacturing ecosystem also makes access to components much easier. In certain sectors, manufacturing clusters exist so many major components can be more easily secured from vendors in closer proximity to the final product manufacturer. To date Trade Without Borders has shipped over 60,000 products and is now focused on building a global franchise network, composed of local companies in the clean energy business. Franchisees use TWBs online platformwith web and mobile applicationsto support their businesses. Franchisees have access to TWBs full portfolio of clean energy products and supporting global trading services, and in the future, will have access to education, training resources, and financing. The franchisees have their responsibilities also, including providing feedback on local market needs, providing after-sales service and support for locally distributed products, and coordinating impact assessment work to understand the social, economic, and environmental impact of our products on local communities, Fernandez said. The impact assessment is important to us as a social enterprise. Based in Vashon, Wash., BURN Manufacturing Co. designs and manufactures high-quality, clean- burning cook stoves for the developing world. The cook stoves are manufactured in Kenya. Eighty percent of the raw materials are sourced offshore (mostly from China) and 20 percent are locally derived. The immensely popular jikokoa stove is sold mostly in Kenya with some additional sales in Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. BURN Manufacturings CEO, Peter Scott, is a champion of local sourcing and manufacturing, when possible. Ensuring quality at the source is expensive and time-consuming when you have multiple suppliers across the world, or even across a single country such as China, Scott said. We prefer to purchase in-country. If quality issues arise, they are easier to address with local sup- pliers. Our supply chain works very closely with our designers and engineers to ensure that we are using materials that can be practically sourced. This must be done right at the beginning of the design process to achieve the best cost efficiency. Many people, Scott pointed out, believe that local modern manufacturing is not possible in East Africa. This is not true, he said. If you have a solid product, go out and raise sufficient capital so you can manufacture locally. Do not subcontract. Develop a strong relationship with a logistics company. Also develop multiple distribution channels to minimize the risk of underperformance from any one channel or distributor. Having a functional supply chain really transforms the sector and peoples view of what is possible in-country. In the case of the jikokoa, Kenyans have really embraced it as their own. For consumers, robust sup- ply chains often mean improved quality and access to after-sales service and spare parts. Quality of life improves because people can purchase affordable, reliable products that enhance health and everyday living. For manufacturers, the biggest advantage of a robust supply chain is the ability to reach a completely untapped market that is rapidly moving up the economic ladder. An efficient supply system could mean having a product available to hundreds of millions of target customers within weeks or even days of launch. The advantages dont only apply to importers of goods. According to Prashanth Venkataramana, a mechanical engineer who is director of India operations for Essmart Global, Developing countries will greatly benefit from the reverse logistics, where produce from smaller villages and farms can reach big cities and global markets efficiently. This can open up a large customer base globally for products that were only available in villages. Local sourcing and manufacturing of products can lead to significant improvements in local and regional economies by creating jobs, improving health, and reducing environmental impacts. However, there can be fundamental challenges in scaling up manufacturing in many developing regions. ;custompagebreak; According to Fernandez, You will likely need to devote considerable resources to education and training and do a lot of hand-holding to communicate your quality standards and all your expectations. You cannot assume anything or take anything for granted because whatever you assume would be the norm, probably isnt the norm locally. Very simply, you would have to undertake a cost-benefit analysis to ultimately decide if it is worthwhile to manufacture locally or not. Many entrepreneurs underestimate the influence that trust-based relationships have on buying decisions in developing markets. The amount of trust customers have in a product depends on how strongly their shopkeepers advocate for it. The key to shopkeeper buy-in often centers on reliable and efficient after-sales service. BURN's charcoal cook stove is assembled locally in Kenya. In many villages, broken products become village trash because after-sales service is unavailable. Essmart Global, however, has a good reputation for not only carrying high-quality products, but also for providing high-quality, after-sales service. Weve found that customers are willing to invest more in a product if it comes with a warranty that is actually honored by the manufacturer, Stenson said. After-sales service can be an additional expense, but its this trust that builds relationships in the supply chain. In developing countries, engineers who are not local to the region often underestimate the challenges related to quality control and added time of shipping and costs of tariffs. There are other needs that may be unfamiliar to foreignersincluding how to communicate effectively with local, regional, and national government bureaucrats, and ensuring proper compliance with multiple layers of laws and regulations. Teaming up with a financially stable, respected local partner can be a critical element in success- fully constructing a supply chain, said Toby Gooley, editor of Supply Chain Quarterly, the publication of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals in Lombard, Ill. A local partner can also help with avoiding other types of pitfalls, such as cultural faux pas or failure to understand the limitations of various modes of transportation at certain times of the year. For example, truck distribution may be relatively fast and cost-effective in the dry season, but during the rainy season it may be very slow and lead to late deliveries. Rail freight or even costly air shipping may make more sense, depending on the locale. The McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2020 over 4 billion people will be living in urban areas and 80 percent of them will be in developing countries. In many of these countriesespecially India, Indonesia, and Chinamajor population growth is occurring in tier-3 cities and outlying rural areas. These are huge markets, sometimes challenging to reach, and they will need innovative supply chains to serve urban and rural populations. According to Cottrill at MIT, developing countries can learn much from best practices that are established in developed countries, but companies that try to simply duplicate Western supply chain designs in emerging economies will almost certainly fail. Each country has a unique set of demands and constraints that require very specific supply chain solutions, he said. Mark Crawford is an independent writer based in Madison, Wis. Working out the best way to source products and find good logistics partners for these products has been a big challenge.

Advice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobs

Advice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobs Advice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobs Being laid off is one of the most emotionally fraught experiences you can go through in your career. It’s something many of us inevitably go through, but it can be hard to discuss with potential employers, let alone your worried friends and family. That’s why we asked to hear your layoff stories: to commiserate over terrible workplace exits and to share wisdom from those of you who have come out of forced unemployment to live to tell the tale. Some of you had best-case scenarios and some of you endured  humiliatingly public layoffs that  still haunt you. All of you were honest when asked by future employers by what had happened. Here’s what Ladders readers said.See if you can get a heads up without causing panicThose of you with thoughtful managers usually got a heads-up about a potential layoff. Patrick from New York said he knew that his days were numbered when “my manager came to me in March and told me it would be good for me to keep my resume up to date, that changes were coming and would be widespread.”Later the next  month, his manager’s prediction came true. The preparation he had from his manager helped him find a new job without a gap in unemployment.“I think of this as sort of a best-case scenario for layoffs. I had a month’s unofficial warning and then a month’s official warning and then two months severance on top of that. I found a job just as the severance was running out, so I guess I needed everything I got.”Mysterious vague meetings are usually a warning signWord to the wise: if your manager makes a meeting to “touch base,” you may need to pack up your stuff, as Mike from Arizona  did.“My manager set a meeting titled “Touch Base” on my calendar a couple days before. (This should’ve been my first indication of what was coming. I’d done the same thing when I had to let people go.),” he wrote.“The day I was let go, I walked into his office and an HR person was there - someone I’d worked closely over the past couple of years. I had been through it on the other side of the desk, so after he told me I was being let go. I shook his hand, thanked him for everything, and went back to my office for a few minutes. There’s no point in prolonging the meeting or asking questions. HR is there to deflect it all anyway. I took the high road.”Leave a good impressionEmotions are running high during the layoff, so it can be tempting to act out or be angry, but it pays off in the long run to  leave a good impression on  your former employer. In any case, there’s nothing productive to be gained by lashing out; once you’re laid off, the decision has already been made and it won’t be reversed. As Mike wrote, “A few days later, I ran into one of my closest friends at work and she talked to my former manager afterward. She told him I took the news like a pro. He also said the way I handled it made him feel even worse - which, I must admit, felt good to hear! The security team, as usual, was there to make sure I wasn’t going to cause trouble. I shook their hands on the way out. They were so nice and sympathetic.”Be prepared for a lot of emotionsNot every company is good at laying people off. Having a private decision made public also makes the layoff sting more.Teri, who worked at a company for more than three years, said the way her news director  called her into a Human Resources office “in front of everyone” left her “embarrassed, sad, angry.”Others also had less than pleasant HR experiences that still leave lasting impressions.“HR was absurdly concerned about getting me out the door immediately,” Anne, who had been at her  company for 20 years, remembers clearly about her layoff. “They really didn’t want me to go back to my office to get my things. I insisted on it anyway. I was angry about being let go and I was angry that, after working there for 20 years, they were acting like I couldn’t be trusted. Also, the severance was stingy- 12 weeks for a 20-year tenure.”An in-person layoff feels more personal than a layoff via phone or email. For some of you, it felt like getting a phone call meant that your hard work for the company never mattered. As Stan from New Jersey, wrote, his layoff by phone left him feeling “like a piece of trash that was discarded.”In one “surreal” experience, Drew from New York said that after he learned about his layoff, his boss “posted my job description immediately and began interviewing my potential replacement while I was still in the office. He also tried to throw me a ‘going away’ party (I refused) and gave me a card and a bottle of booze on my last day.”Our readers’ best advice on how to handle a layoff“Always be nice to people. You never know who’s going to end up where and when you’ll need somebody to vouch for you.” - Ross, New York, New York“Don’t panic. Take a day to figure out your next steps, and let your emotions subside before sending any rash emails. Also [to find a new job], strike when the iron is hot and people are sympathetic to your plight.” - Emily, New York, New York“Negotiate. Don’t feel guilty or embarrassed. And go to the gym every day instead of sleeping late and feeling sorry for yourself.”  - Drew, New York, New York“PTO turns out not to be a very good deal if you never have the opportunity to use it.”- Tad, Oakland, California“If it does happen to you unexpectedly, take it as an opportunity to do something better. I took a chance with a payout and eventually got a job with a much higher salary.” - Anora, New York, New York“Know that work doesn’t define you, and if it does, there are bigger issues to deal with. You’ll find a job again.” - Josh, New York, New York“Think about what you really want to do, what skills you have, where you might be happiest. Try not to panic. There are always ways to make money…Living through it is freeing- you know that you can survive anything.” - Susanna, Broo klyn, New York“If you feel personally targeted, talk to your union, a lawyer right away. Otherwise keep your head up. They let you go, and you need to let them go.”- Teri, city not disclosed“No matter how dumb an idea it was for your employer to let you go, you have to get over that pain and anger you feel. It took me over a month, but once I mentally moved on, I was able to start searching productively for opportunities I was excited about. You have to be able to talk about yourself and your career without this traumatic event dominating every detail.” - Chris, Kansas City, Missouri“Always keep a rainy day fund to relieve the stress of extended unemployment. I manage my finances to plan for a worst-case scenario and I was financially prepared for this event.”- Anonymous, San Clemente, California“If at all possible, take the high road and don’t say something that will make you feel good for 30 seconds only to regret it forever. You never know whose path you might aga in cross…If you get severance and can afford to do so, give yourself time to exhale and decompress. You need to get your mind cleared before you can start a job search.”- Mike, Phoenix, Arizona“Act as if anything your company provides you: computer, email, cloud account, etc., could be taken [away from]  you at the end of any meeting you go into, because that’s how they do.” - Patrick, New York, New York“1. Don’t stay at work right after it happens, lest you say something you may not mean. If you have work to do before your end date, that’s fine, but take a walk, get a coffee, call a friend or a loved one, and let the shock of it pass before you see another colleague. You’ll have a lot of sympathy from coworkers and friends in this situation, and it’s best to maintain that reservoir. You’ll need it.2. Call everyone. You never know who has a good contact, who has admired your work from afar, etc. There’s absolutely no shame in what you’re going through, so p ost (kindly) about your situation, let people know you’re looking, and work your network with your head up. In all likelihood this decision has nothing to do with you, your skill or your performance, so carry that pride with you.” - Matt, New York, New York
